Unfortunately, most yoga mats are made with cheap plastics such as PVC, containing harmful petrochemicals – making them a dangerous and unsustainable conduit for your practice. Stretching and sweating out toxins is moot if you’re absorbing chemicals in the process. Exposure to dioxins can cause reproductive, developmental, and other health problems, including cancer. Furthermore, the manufacturing of the average yoga mat is a dirty process, leading to release of dioxins and waste byproducts. Plastic or PVC based mats don’t degrade in a landfill and never go away, perpetuating the waste problem and leaching toxins into our precious earth.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl, is one of the most environmentally hazardous consumer materials ever produced.
